A recent return to North Carolina's Outer Banks meant another great week of shooting. We had perfect weather with beautiful clouds and awesome sunrises and sunsets. With the way OBX is situated you can see great sunrises on the ocean side and incredible sunsets on the sound side, all within a ten minute walk. I try to shoot different loacations on these visits, and this time I focused on the Bodie and Cape Hatteras lighthouses and also sunrises at Frisco Pier. The pier was damaged heavily from 2011's Hurricane Irene. See my highlights below.

Pam Sherman's recent column in the Democrat & Chronicle about the "best of" in 2013 sparked me to look at the photos I did this past year and come up with my own collection of "best ofs." This has been a great year for me with photography. I had 14 pano pictures published in the D&C, which led to three photos on their 2014 calendar. I took third place in the Life in the Finger Lakes magazine's annual photo contest--the first contest I've entered since my college years. I also had a great year with wedding, engagement and senior photos.
My wife and her sister decided to pay a visit to their brother and his family in North Carolina this weekend, and with both of our boys away at college, I had an entire weekend to myself. So, when the cat's away the mice will play, and in my case, it was time for me to spend time shooting. My camera has been calling me for a few weeks, so I was happy to head out on a local photo adventure. I'm convinced that some of the best photography can happen within just a few miles of your home. I didn't want to venture too far off, so I put $40 of gas in my car and started exploring.
I had an opportunity to visit Phoenix, AZ recently, and, of course, my camera accompanied me on my journey. Arizona in the summer is unforgetable, especially if you have lived most of your life in New York State. The heat is crazy! Most days during my four day stay exceeded 110 degrees. I happen to be a fan of summer heat, so I was fine with it, but for most it would be one of those things you wouldn't forget. I had a chance to make two photo trips during my time in Arizona: one to Sedona and the other to Camelback Mountain in Scottsdale.
