Pam Sherman's recent column in the Democrat & Chronicle about the "best of" in 2013 sparked me to look at the photos I did this past year and come up with my own collection of "best ofs." This has been a great year for me with photography. I had 14 pano pictures published in the D&C, which led to three photos on their 2014 calendar. I took third place in the Life in the Finger Lakes magazine's annual photo contest--the first contest I've entered since my college years. I also had a great year with wedding, engagement and senior photos.

One of the best times of the year for photography in Western New York is, without a doubt, the fall. For photos, the fall comes and goes pretty quickly, requiring some advance planning. The day I went out was overcast, and I didn't think it was going to result in very good photos. But an overcast day, with an ocassional sighting of the sun, can work to your advantage.
High Falls is one of three waterfalls on the Genesee River that flows through the City of Rochester. It's really a magnificant view from the Pont De Rennes pedestrian bridge that spans the river. I've photographed High Falls many times, including at night with fireworks as a backdrop during the days of the lazer light show, many times during day light, and also with a full wedding party. This shot was taken at midday, and then processed using High Dynamic Range (HDR) to bring definition to the clouds. I love the view of the city from this vantage point.
